Follow Jesus in His Steps (10):

The Parables Said by Jesus (3) - The Parable of the Talents

Scriptures: Matthew 25:14-29, 1Peter 4:7-10

Memory Verses: But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”  Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (1Peter 4:7-10)

(A)  The Lord’s commissions may vary, but every one has one and will settle the account with the Lord sooner or later

1)  The Lord gives talents according to individual’s ability (compared with Luke 19:11-17 the parable where every servant receives one mina)

2) One day, the Lord will settle the accounts with us ( Matthew 25:19)

(B) Men often respond differently to the Lord’s commissions

-  The greatest difference is not in the gifts or responsibilities, but the attitudes and efforts

- “Immediately went to trade  vs. “Dug in the ground…hid his talent”

- “Faithfully managing and joyfully giving accounts   vs. “Purposely being lazy,

unreasonable and irresponsible”

(c) The extremes of two endings

1) Different evaluations from the master

   - To the faithful servant : “Well done, good and faithful servant…”

               - To the wicked servant: “ You the wicked and lazy servant…”

2)  Completely different  results  ( 11 talents vs. nothing)

a) Everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away

-To  the faithful servant: “You have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things”

- To the wicked servant: Take the talent from him , and give it to him who has ten talents”

b) “Entering into the joy of the master” vs. “Weeping and gnashing of teeth in the darkness”

- To the faithful servant: “Enter into the joy of your lord”

- To the wicked servant: “Cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”
